Anjali A. of New Jersey has ridden motorcycles in places that many never get to visit, let alone explore on two wheels. And even though she's been on some epic rides, she still has some destinations on her bucket list.
Tell us about your riding experience. How long have you been riding, and how many bikes have you owned? How did you first become interested in riding?
I have been riding since I was very young. I could ride a moto solo by the age of 12. But I really got into long distance motorcycle trips, and fell in love with bigger and better motorcycles, when I was around 21. Ever since, I have been an avid traveler thanks to my job. I would travel to several countries, backpack, rent a motorcycle, and explore whenever I could.
I owned some smaller bikes back in India, and I have rented various types of bikes. Ever since I started traveling around the world, I mostly rent an assortment of Harleys.
Since moving to New York in 2013 for grad school, I've done several trips across the United States. I first bought a 1200cc Harley Sportster which is my baby listed on Twisted Road. As much as I love Harleys, I think I've grown out of them, and my love for bigger adventure motorcycles led me to buy the BMW GS F850. It is also a much better machine for long rides and all-terrain riding.
Have you taken any long motorcycle trips? Tell us about them - where did you go, where did you stay, who did you ride with?
I have taken several long trips. Some of the most memorable ones were the South of France to Spain along the French Coast, the North of France, a trip around Guatemala, and Midwest through the Badlands & Black Hills. In the summer of 2019, I did a one-week ride from New York to Maine via Vermont and New Hampshire. The following summer, I managed to ride down to West Virginia and back via Shenandoah. Both were motorcycle camping trips. I absolutely loved the solo riding and living-on-the-road experience.
Tell us some more about you - where do you live? What kind of work do you do?
I live in New Jersey, and I work in an investment bank in Midtown Manhattan as a Global Markets Trader in the Securities division. Since the onset of COVID, I have been working from home, which gave me more time to sneak in rides after work during the summer. I also clocked a lot more miles doing weekend rides and motorcycle camping trips in 2020, since flying anywhere for a vacay was out of the question.
What are your hobbies - what do you enjoy doing when you're not riding?
I love working out, cooking, and occasionally making some art. I'm really passionate about scuba diving, and it sucks that I haven't been diving in over a year due to COVID. I am also working on my private pilot's license, so yeah, that will be a hobby as well.
Tell us about your experiences with Twisted Road - as either an owner, as a rider, or both. What do you enjoy most about being part of our community?
Twisted Road has been an amazing community. I got to meet a few riders who rented my Sportster. I was also able to rent it out to someone who was considering taking up riding seriously. So I hope I have been able to make a small difference in helping them get into riding.
What are your favorite rides near your hometown?
There are some quick day trips in and around the NYC metro area, and several routes around the Catskills region and towards Delaware Water Gap. I wouldn't say riding in and around here is my favorite, but we make do with what we have. Definitely several beautiful lakes and twisted roads to explore around NY, NJ, PA—all in a weekend.
Last question - where do you hope to ride one day?
I would love to ride in Bolivia, Chile, and Patagonia someday! Just need the stars to align!
